Enjoy the California Coast and Annual Festivities in Coronado

The island resort community of Coronado lies along the San Diego Bay across from San Diego along the southwestern corner of California. Elisha Spurr Babcock, Jacob Gruendike and Hampton L. Story purchased the land here and began creating the resort town in 1886. Two years later, they completed the Hotel del Coronado. Eventually, a school, athletic, baseball and boating clubs formed. Today, Coronado boasts three resorts along with entertainment, dining and shopping options.

Things To Do

In May, the resort town hosts the annual Coronado Jazzfest. The event provides students ranging from middle school through college to perform live and learn from the experience. Each performance is judged and receives feedback. The Salt & Pepper Clinic also offers the chance for young musicians to hone their skills.

In October, the North Island Naval Station presents the Coronado Speed Festival. Spectators have the rare chance to view vintage cars and muscle machines take to the track and compete. The location also offers refreshments and merchandise vendors.

For four days in November, the community hosts the annual Coronado Island Film Festival. Movie goers have the chance to view specially selected documentaries, narrations, short and full-length films representing different genre categories. The festivities are also attended by well-known film makers, celebrities and film critics.

On December 1, Coronado hosts the annual Holiday Parade & Open House. In addition to the illuminated parade, the Hotel del Coronado hosts the Polar Bear Tea. The event provides various children's activities, which include stories presented by Mrs. Claus. Youngster whose families participated in the Teddy Bear Drive also receive a Coca Cola polar bear.

During December, the Hotel del Coronado hosts a number of family-friendly events. Various children's groups present holiday-themed concerts in the ball room. The facility creates an ice skating rink along with waterfront. All enjoy the carnival games and refreshments in addition to taking photos with Santa. There is also a professional ice skating performance and a fireworks display."
