Dover Days Festival

During the first weekend in May, the community comes together to welcome spring and to commemorate the heritage of the capital city. Anyone attending the event has the opportunity to tour the historic location that offers walking tours, tours of historic houses and interesting facts about Dover. The numerous festivities include a main street parade, a children's parade, animal and auto shows and live performances. Take part in the Maypole dance, watch the fireworks and enjoy the food and camaraderie.

Enjoy the History, Culture and Festivities in Dover, DE

William Penn founded the capital city in 1683 and named the location for the city of Dover in England. Dover's long history includes being part of the Underground Railroad. Today, the city is home to Delaware State University and the Dover Air Force Base. Popular locations that many make a point of visiting include the Dover Downs Casino, the John Dickinson Plantation and the Johnson Victrola Museum.

Things To Do

During the first weekend in May, the historic community celebrates Dover Days in honor of the city's heritage. The event features the largest parade in the county. Activities include a traditional Maypole dance, vintage vehicle rides, family-friendly games and hundreds of food, arts and crafts vendors. Live bands entertain guests. The community also recreates a colonial village and re-enactors replay historical events from the Revolutionary War, the Civil War and WWII.

Each August, artists, fans celebrities and others gather for the annual Dover Comic Con. The event takes place at various indoor locations along with boasting an outdoor market. Guests enjoy meet and greets, panel discussions and activities. Vendors provide the food.

On the fourth Saturday in June, the African American community welcomes all to celebrate their diverse cultures during the Positively Dover Festival. The festivities include live entertainment, an outdoor marketplace and various games and activities for all.

For an entire weekend toward the end of August, the Air Mobility Command Museum hosts the yearly Thunder Over Dover: Dover AFB Open House. The Thunderbirds along with current and historic aircraft fly over the area and provide an airshow at designated times throughout the day to the delight of onlookers. There are also many types of vintage craft on display for viewing.

The Okt Dover Fest at the end of September commemorates the entire community in addition to residents of German descent. The festivities take place downtown and include ongoing live music, a beer tent, local cuisine and food trucks. Street performers entertain crowds and local artists display their works."
