Welcome To Ames, IA

Welcome to Ames, Iowa's Central City

Ames is centrally-located city in the state of Iowa that was founded in the late 19th-century and is well-known as the home of the Iowa State University of Science and Technology, a public institution with leading colleges in Agriculture, Design, Engineering, and Veterinary Medicine. The city has a number of art and cultural options, numerous parks, and in 2010 was ranked ninth on the "Best Places to Live" list by CNNMoney.com.

Things To Do

The Farm House Museum is located on the campus of the Iowa State University of Science and Technology and serves as a monument of the school's history and culture. The farm house was built in 1860 and was the first building to be built on the property of the Iowa State campus. The farm house is now a National Historic Landmark.

The Octagon Center for the Arts is located in downtown Ames and provides arts education courses and outreach to the local community. The center also features special events, rotating exhibits, and a retail gallery shop.

The Brunnier Art Museum features a decorative arts collection, and is the only accredited museum in the state that has such a collection. Fine and decorative art objects are included in the unique collection and admittance to the museum is free, although there is a suggested donation of $3.

Reiman Gardens is also located on the Iowa State campus and is a 17-acre public garden and the largest public garden in Iowa. Included are eleven unique garden areas, an indoor conservatory, an indoor butterfly garden, and a gift shop.
