Welcome To Carmel, IN

The Indianapolis suburb was established by Quakers in 1837 and was originally known as Bethlehem. In 1924, Carmel became the first city in the United States to have an automated traffic signal.

Today, the community is thriving and has gained many awards, which include the best place to live in America. Local points of interest include the Carmel Clay Historical Society Museum, the elaborate Center for the Performing Arts and the miles of trails along the Monon Greenway.

Things To Do

In July, the Carmel Arts & Design District presents the Art of Wine event. Area adults spend a pleasant summer evening sampling vintages created by local vintners while browsing the location's art galleries and shops. Scheduled performers provide live entertainment.

During the last weekend in August, automotive fans enjoy the experience of touring the exhibits presented at the Automobilia event. Along with the chance to see rare cars, the festivities also include one-of-a-kind motorcycles. While enjoying the live entertainment and the vehicles on display, visitors are also encouraged to tour the galleries.

In the middle of September, the community participates in one of the newest events known as the Carmel PorchFest. Residents spread blankets on lawns with coolers filled with refreshments to enjoy dozens of artists who perform live on area porches. The festival provides an avenue in which local musicians and vocalists may share their talents with others.

The Carmel International Arts Festival also takes place in September. More than 130 chosen artists from around the country arrive to display their works in watercolor, oils, photography, pottery and wood. The creations of student artists are also put on exhibit. The weekend event also features live entertainment and food vendors. Children enjoy the Young at Art station, which provides an outlet for their inner creativity.

The Carmel Arts and Design district welcomes the onset of December holidays by offering the events during the Holidays in the District. Visits with Santa, his elves and reindeer accompany children's activities and entertainment. The Holiday Trolley takes passenger around the community to enjoy the colorful light displays. Other activities include a gingerbread scavenger hunt and choral presentations.
