Welcome To Waltham, MA

The community was settled in 1634 along the shores of the Charles River in the northeastern region of the state. Waltham was originally part of Watertown and did not become an independent city until 1738. Waltham gained the nickname of "watch city" through the success of the American Watch Company.

The Mertz company also made the first U.S. motorcycle in Waltham. Interesting destinations include the historic homes found within the community, which include the Gore Place, the Lyman Estate and the Robert Treat Paine Estate.

Things To Do

Toward the end of April, the Gore Place Estate hosts the annual Sheepshearing Festival. The fleeces of the location's merino sheep are collected, cleaned and sold. The fiber tent provides the chance to view the items made by dozens of artists specializing in wool yarn crafts. There are also live animal demonstrations. Craft booths display handmade birdhouses, candles, jewelry, ceramics, metalwork and other items.

In May, all are invited to attend the unique Watch City Steampunk Festival. The event is designed to gather guests of all ages for a day of steampunk-themed arts and crafts. Live entertainment takes to the stage, and families enjoy a variety of activities. Food vendors are also on hand.

In June, water sports enthusiasts look forward to the annual Riverfest. Activities during the two-day event include guided river walks, moonlight canoe tours and a pet parade. Artists arrive to paint the picturesque waterfront views. Two stages provide live entertainment. Children enjoy the games and other activities. Vendors display crafts and offer fair foods.

From the Middle of July through the end of August, music lovers converge on Waltham Common for the annual Free Concert Series. The music plays on each Tuesday evening. Each concert features a different music genre.

From the day after Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve, the community hosts the annual Holiday Prelude. Along with deals on dining and shopping options, guests of all ages enjoy a variety of holiday-themed activities and events. Choose from holiday concerts, or Santa meet and greets. Some might also enjoy entering the gingerbread house contest.
