Welcome To Jackson, MS

Experience the Heart and Soul of the South in Jackson, MS

Named for General Andrew Jackson, the capital city was established in the southwestern region of the state along the Pearl River at an elevations 2,900 feet (880 meters). Jackson is also unique in that it is the only capital city established atop an extinct volcano. The community's slogan is "City with Soul," as many blues, gospel and jazz musicians hailed from Jackson. Popular locations include the Mississippi Museum of Art and the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science.

Things To Do

The charitable Stray At Home Arts and Music Festival welcomes visitors of all ages to enjoy the variety of music presented, the food selections and the arts and crafts displays. The event also features children's activities. Proceeds benefit the local animal rescue organization.

Local residents of Greek background host a three-day May Greek Fest each year to commemorate their culture and heritage. The celebration includes music, dancing and traditional foods along activities for the youngsters.

The August Jackson Rhythm and Blues Festival presents a combination of Rhythm and Blues concerts to celebrate the city's rich music history. Five different stages provide ongoing entertainment.

Each September, members of the Celtic heritage celebrate CelticFest Mississippi. The event features a variety of traditional, dance, music and vocal performances along with offering cultural workshops. A children's area provides parents and little ones with various activities. The location also welcomes food vendors.

The Chimneyville Crafts Festival arrives at the beginning of each December for holiday shopping convenience. The wide selection of handmade items range from clothing and household dÃ©corations to furniture and jewelry.
