Welcome To Peterborough, NH

Be Inspired by the Natural Beauty of Peterborough, NH

The community was formed along the Contoocook River in 1749 close to the south-central border of the state. The new settlement was later named for land speculator Lieutenant Peter Prescott. Today, the city's terrain spans from the shorelines along the lake and river-fronts to the peak of Pack Monadnock Mountain. The natural beauty of Peterborough has long attracted outdoor recreation enthusiasts along with a long list of famous artists.

Things To Do

For four days in April, Peterborough hosts the annual Monadnock International Film Festival. The event enables movie fans and film industry workers to enjoy a variety of full-length and short feature films at various locations in the community. The films are created by artists from around the world and cover a variety of topics. The event concludes with an awards ceremony.

On the third Saturday of May, the downtown area welcomes all to visit the Children and the Arts Festival. The many activities are designed to introduce youngsters to the visual and performing arts. Thousands of children and their parents enjoy the Giant Puppet Parade, face painting, storytelling and other festivities.

From the first week in July into the second week in August, Depot Park offers live concerts on Friday nights. Each concert features a different musical group offering anything from blues and jazz to country, rock 'n roll to Celtic music. All are welcome to pack a picnic dinner and enjoy the sights and sounds along the riverfront.

In July, Peterborough residents are encouraged to enter the realm of fantasy during A Mid-Summer Day of Fairy House Fun. Local residents create unique fairy houses, which are then hidden throughout the downtown area. Guests then have the pleasure of hunting for the wee one's homes. The Mariposa Museum offers crafts and goodies to little ones along with fairy tale stories.

In October, the community celebrates the onset of fall during the Peak into Peterborough events. Local restaurants offer special discounts and the Monadnock Center for History & Culture hosts a live concert. Stores offer raffles, samples and prizes. Visitors have the option of taking hayrides around the downtown region."
