Welcome To Montclair, NJ

Explore the Culture, History and Traditions of Montclair, NJ

The picturesque community stands in the northeastern region of the state bordering the Watchung Mountains. English settlers established the first homesteads here in 1666. However, the township was not officially recognized until the location merged with a portion of the Bloomfield Township in 1868. Today, Montclair is considered a "bedroom community" and a family-orientated town with an emphasis on education. The hills and spectacular scenery often attract artists and writers to the area. Some of the many popular attractions found here include the Howard Van Vleck Arboretum, the Montclair Art Museum and the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center.

Things To Do

In June, the Montclair Museum hosts the annual African-American Heritage Parade and Festival. A grand parade featuring first responders, business owners, marching bands and other organizations riding elaborately decorated floats make their way through the city to Nishuane Park. The festivities include live entertainment and children's activities. Guests also enjoy many traditional foods.

In the middle of June, area venues host attend the annual Montclair Food & Wine Festival. Nearly three dozen restaurants combine efforts with local breweries, distilleries and wineries to offer a variety of fine meals paired with alcoholic beverages.

On Tuesday and Thursday nights in June and July, the Montclair Department of Recreation hosts the annual Montclair Recreation Free Outdoor Movies. The films are shown in one of the local parks or at the Nishuane Pool.

In the middle of July, all are welcome to attend the annual Montclair Film Festival. The week-long event features the works created by global filmmakers who offer audiences the chance to view films covering a wide variety of topics. The selection includes popular films along with new releases designed to educate, engage and entertain viewers through the art of visual storytelling.

In August, music fans venture to Nishuane Park for the annual Montclair Jazz Festival. Guests are invited to bring blankets or lawn chairs to enjoy the concerts provided by various artists. Food vendors are in attendance, and there is a beer garden."
