Discover the History and Small Town Charm of White Plains, NY

The city lies in the southeastern most region of the state mere miles from the coast. The area was originally used as farmland by the Native Americans until Puritans acquired the land and established settlements in 1683. The White Plains came from either the numerous white balsam trees or the foggy mist that rose above the swamp. Popular local activities include watching a basketball game played by the Westchester Knicks or a rugby match played by the White Plains Wombats. Cultural entertainment is available at the White Plains Performing Arts Center, which hosts everything from Broadway shows to concerts.

Things To Do

During the summer months, individual neighborhood parks and locations host a variety of evening entertainment during Neighborhood Nights. Activities include concerts, dances, outdoor movies, craft shows and children's events.

The White Plains Outdoor Arts Festival takes place in Tibbets Park during the first weekend in June. Ceramics, glass work, jewelry, paintings and textiles are some of the mediums used for the creations displayed by dozens of artists. The event also offers scholarships for student artists, an art workshop and food vendors.

The annual mid-June White Plains Juneteenth Festival is an event celebrated in many communities across the country and commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Festivities include parades, games, contests and concerts.

On Thursdays starting in the middle of June, Renaissance Plaza hosts Noon Day Concerts. The two-hour concerts are provided by different musicians and vocalists who offer a variety of music genres each week.

In the middle of July, Tenure Park hosts the annual Shakespeare in the Park presentations. Multiple performances of a specific play occur over the weekend.

Each August, city residents celebrate their ethnic diversity during the Gardella & Multicultural Festival. The fun involves concerts and other entertaining shows, food, health information, cultural demonstrations and competitions.
