Oregon State Fair

The first official Oregon State Fair was held in 1861, and by the next year, the event was moved to its permanent home in Salem. Numerous activities and competitions are scheduled during the 11-day event in August. These include exhibits and competitions for such things as fine arts, crafts, photography and gardening. Carnival rides and games line the midway. Livestock competitions are held. Headline performers grace the main stage throughout the fair's run.

Family-Friendly Activities and Places to Explore in Salem, OR

The state capital was established in the Willamette Valley alongside the Willamette River. Along with picturesque natural landscape, Salem is surrounded by a thriving agricultural community that specializes in everything from beer and wine to cheese and produce. Historic homes, museums, performing arts venues and great dining options await visitors.

Things to do

The April weekend Oregon Agricultural Fest provides city dwellers with the chance to learn more about agriculture with a variety of activities and interactive exhibits. The event features entertainment, toy tractor races, a petting zoo, a garden exhibit and refreshments.

The World Beat Festival provides all with the chance to experience approximately 70 cultures during the annual June celebration. See costumes from around the world, sample traditional foods and watch more than 100 live performances. There are also parades, demonstrations and activities for all.

For four days in July, Salem residents enjoy the Marion County Fair. Agricultural and animal exhibits, friendly competitions, a parade and carnival are but some of the many activities that take place.

Tens of thousands come to the city in July for the annual Salem Art & Fair Festival. Hundreds of artists demonstrate their talents and creations while two stages provide live entertainment. Adults enjoy the beer and wine gardens while youngsters stay occupied with activities in the Kids' Court.
