Discover a Unique Southern Border Experience in Brownsville, TX

The metropolis lies on the southern tip of the state and began as a military camp and fort prior to the onset of the Mexican-American War. The community was officially established in 1848. Along the city's borders, guests might visit the sites where the Palmito Ranch and the Palo Alto battles took place. Brownville's cultural district covers four-square blocks and features the Brownsville Museum of Fine Arts, which houses contemporary and renowned works in addition to unique astronomical and Egyptian art exhibits. Hundreds of thousands visit the Glady's Porter Zoo every year to see the collection of endangered and rare animals cared for by the facility.

Things To Do

Brownsville lies in the Rio Grande Valley, which is a prime location for the Annual International Birding Festival. Up to 200 species of birds frequent the area to the delight of bird watchers. The event offers guided trips, informational seminars and fun activities.

During the second weekend in February, the Brownsville/South Padre Island International Airport hosts Air Fiesta. The event features aerial demonstrations and ground exhibits of aircraft ranging from historic war planes to modern technological wonders. Food and merchandise vendors also attend.

At the end of February, the community celebrates its long-standing friendship with border town Matamoros, Mexico during Charro Days. The gala event includes colorful parades, a carnival, cultural entertainment, ethnic foods and fun-filled family activities.

The annual Paella Festival takes place downtown in September. Various amateur and professional cooking teams compete to create the best paella dishes. Guests have the privilege of tasting the results while also enjoying Spanish beers and wines.

In October, a list of local, regional and international breweries present their brews during the Brownsville Beer Fest in Dean Porter Park. Guests have the chance to sample craft, rare and specialty beers throughout the adult-oriented festivities. The event also features ongoing concerts and beer-themed competitions.
