Welcome To Commerce, TX

The area was originally known as "Cow Hill" for the cattle that roamed the region. The community began with a mercantile store and a trading post. However, the development of cotton fields, farms and ranches led to a thriving economy and influenced naming the community "Commerce." Today, the town is known for being the home of Texas A&M University.

Local points of interest include the Northeast Texas Children's Museum, Cooper Lake State Park and Jim Chapman Lake.

Things To Do

Throughout the year, the Northeast Texas Children's Museum hosts a number of family-friendly events. Each January, the facility presents the Children's Health and Safety Fair. Parents have the chance to spend quality time with their youngsters by attending the Daddy-Daughter Dance and the Mother-Son Night. The facility also provides little ones with the chance to meet and greet Santa during the community's Christmas celebrations.

For a weekend each September, the community rallies for the Bois d'Arc Bash, which commemorates the durable Bois d'Arc trees native to Commerce. The activities include the Bois d'Arc Pageant, a golf tournament, a parade, a 5K run/walk, a barbecue, wine tastings and a live concert.

From the first week in September through November, the Texas A&M Lions football players take to the field. The team has been representing the University in the Lonestar Conference since 1915. Since that time, the team played in the Tangerine Bowl four times, the Live United Texarkana Bowl and the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl along with other championships.

The community's Chamber of Commerce hosts a number of annual events. In December the town welcomes winter and the upcoming holidays during the Bois d'Arc Christmas Parade & Celebration. Activities include the chance to have brunch with Santa and go shopping at the Merry Marketplace for Missions. Festivities also include family games, live music and refreshments.
