Cedar City lies close to the southwestern border of Utah. Although fur traders and mountain men often passed through the area, Mormons were the first pioneers to arrive in 1851. The location was named for the abundance of cedar trees found here. The community blossomed and today offers an abundance of outdoor recreation opportunities. Cedar City is known as the gateway to Bryce Canyon National Park, Grand Canyon National Park and Zion National Park.

Things To Do

Beginning each summer, Southern Utah University presents the annual Utah Shakespeare Festival. Each year, the popular theatre troupe performs a variety of Shakespeare's famous plays, which change from year to year.

Cedar City promotes fitness, health and the human spirit during the Utah Summer Games. The event features an Olympics-like atmosphere as hundreds of amateur athletes of all ages compete in a wide variety of sporting events. The action unfolds indoors and outdoors at the Utah State University.

Community residents celebrate summer during the July Jamboree. The festivities take place along Main Street in the downtown area. The fun includes an American Ninja Warrior course, inflatables for the kids, a classic car show. Different bands provide live entertainment and vendors offer food and merchandise. Visitors of all ages also enjoy many activities.

In September, astronomy enthusiasts have the chance to attend the annual Southwest Astronomy Festival. The festival welcomes stargazers of all ages to experience the wonder and fascination of exploring the night skies. There are art exhibitions, a star party and various night time hikes in area parks.

For four days toward the end of October, the community celebrates its heritage during the annual Cedar Livestock Heritage Festival. The event begins with a sheep parade along Main Street. Demonstrations include a draft horse show and pull, a tractor driving demonstration and a vintage car show. Many participate in various competitions including the dutch oven cooking contest and the art contest. The crowds enjoy hearing traditional cowboy music and poetry and attend the dirt dance. There are also vintage craft, food and beverage vendors."
