  • For Martha Gonzalez, associate professor of Chicanx-Latinx Studies at Scripps, art and activism are inextricably linked. As a member of the Grammy Award-winning Quetzal, Gonzalez and her bandmates have built upon the rich history of Chicano activism in East Los Angeles that began in the 1960s, urging their community through music to go beyond resistance and to build social and cultural infrastructures that simultaneously create space for political change and creative nourishment. One technique is through their collective songwriting (past themes include cancelling rent, houselessness, community land trusts, and healthcare). They bring an iteration of this signature workshop to Scripps this fall. This program is supported by the Alexa Fullerton Hampton 42 Fund
