Historic Traditions and Modern-day Fun Await in Bentonville, AR

The city of Bentonville was founded in the northwestern corner of Arkansas. European pioneers first arrived here in 1837 and established settlements. They originally named the community Osage for the Native Americans who once used the area as a hunting ground. The new town was eventually renamed Bentonville in commemoration of inventor Linn Boyd Benton.

In 1950, Sam Walton established a 5 and 10 store here. The location later became Wal-Mart headquarters. Some of the many attractions found in modern-day Bentonville include the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the Museum of Native American History and the Peel Mansion Museum.

Things To Do

In June, residents are invited to the space surrounding Lawrence Plaza to enjoy the annual Pignic feast with all of the trimmings. Different area chefs put their unique spin on the traditional BBQ to create mouthwatering results. The crowd also enjoys live entertainment provided by local bands.

In September, the local school district hosts the annual Bentonville Harvest Festival. The three-day festivities include a 5K run/walk, a queen contest, a classic car show and a parade. The community commemorates the Marine Corps and actors portray the Morgan Raiders. Guests also enjoy live concerts throughout the event.

In the middle of September, Bentonville hosts the unique World Champion Squirrel Cook-Off. Visitors from across the country and around the world come to see teams of camp cooks, game chefs and food lovers transform the common rodent into a delicious feast by baking, boiling, frying squirrel with other ingredients. The day-long event also includes fun-filled activities, a beer tent and live entertainment.

Bentonville welcomes the holiday season with a number of entertaining events throughout November and December to create a Winter Wonderland. During the first weekend in November, vendors set up tents and present Toyland to the delight of youngsters. Toward the middle of the month, all enjoy the lighting of Town Square. During the second week of December, spectators enjoy the annual Christmas Parade, which marks the arrival of Santa."
