One three-day long weekend every September, hundreds of artists that include the biggest names in jazz, blues and funk come together on the 20-acre Monterey Fairgrounds for one of the most celebrated musical events in the country. Entertainment also includes films and workshops for younger guests. Vendors offer beverages, food and products.
Local philanthropist Warren Hellman started this three-day annual event because of his love of the music. Free to the public, the festival encompasses three days and takes place in October at the Golden Gate Park. Originally a festival for bluegrass performers and fans, the festival expanded to include country, folk and rock with performances offered by numerous celebrity artists.
For over 120 years, millions bring in the New Year by attending the spectacular parade that sends the sweet smell of roses through the air. Dozens of elaborately designed floats accompany the country's finest marching bands and equestrian organizations that make their way through the streets of Pasadena during the two-hour extravaganza.
