The northeastern location known as Calaveras County was made famous in Mark Twain's story entitled "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. In commemoration, the county hosts the annual Jumping Frog Jubilee. The location features giant valleys, sequoia forests and rolling hills along with a variety of caverns. Gold mining was once prominent and the mineral calaverite was discovered here in 1861.
