Aspen Offers Year-round Beauty and Festivities in the Colorado Mountains

The remote community of Aspen is surrounded by the Elk, Rocky and Sawatch Mountain Ranges in the central region of Colorado. The town began as a mining camp along the Fork River when prospectors were in search of silver. The name was chosen for the abundance of aspen trees common to the area. The community continued growing through the 1880s. The stunning location sparked the development of ski resorts in the 1950s. Outdoor recreation enthusiasts of all backgrounds continue enjoying Aspen year round. Independence Pass, the John Denver Sanctuary and the White River National Forest are all local points of interest.

Things To Do

For four days in January, Aspen hosts the annual Wintersköl - Aspen Winter Festival. The community-wide festivities are designed to celebrate winter and include a Soupskol soup cook-off, a doggie fashion show, snow sculptures and a fat cycle bike race. The evenings include fireworks displays.

On Wednesdays from the middle of June through the middle of August, all are invited to attend the festivities during the Snowmass Rodeo. The events bring back the famous days of the Wild West. Before the rodeo, all enjoy a BBQ dinner provided by the Hickory House. The fun begins with cowboys and cowgirls mount wild horses or bulls and ride for the designated time. Traditional rodeo competitions are also part of the fun. After sunset, there are campfire sing-a-longs and marshmallow roasting.

Aspen celebrates the 4th of July by hosting a number of family-friendly activities. The celebration begins with the cannon blast emanating through the air from the Smuggler Mine. Spectators enjoy a gala parade and the children's bike rodeo. Live concerts are offered throughout the day along with various activities and games. If environmental conditions persist, there is a fireworks display in the evening. Adults, children and their four-legged friends are also invited to take part in the one-mile Boogie's Buddy Race at Rio Grand Park.

Each October, Aspen hosts the annual six-day Filmfest. The noncompetitive event showcases the documentary and narrative films created by independent artists from around the world. Many of the films presented and enjoyed by audiences later gain box office success."
