Welcome To Hamden, CT

Hamden lies in the south-central region of the state. The Mill and Quinnipiac River along with the Whitney and Wintergreen Lakes flow through or border the city. The community began when William Christopher Reilly and the Reverend John Davenport bought the land in 1638, and the Puritans established settlements.

Today, historic Hamden offers many different opportunities for all residents in entertainment, education and recreation. Local points of interest include the Eli Whitney Museum and the Sleeping Giant State Park.

Things To Do

In April, the community takes part in the Earth Day Celebration. The fun includes a bird walk, a scavenger hunt, face painting, arts and crafts, hula hoops and birds of prey demonstrations. Residents also have the chance to recycle various items.

During the first Saturday in May, interested individuals have the chance to attend the annual Yoga Tribe Festival. Activities include different types of yoga classes, workshops and circus yoga. Guests may take guided hikes and take part in the sacred sweat ceremony. There is also live entertainment and food vendors. The event concludes with a kirtan concert.

In July, residents come together to celebrate Compassionfest. The event is designed for people believing in compassion, equality and kindness to gather for meals made from vegan foods and cruelty-free products. Artisans display their works. Performers and musicians offer live entertainment. There are also healing workshops.

On Wednesday nights throughout July and the first week in August, all are welcome to Larry's Playground at the Hamden Middle School for the annual Summer Family Concert Series. The playground equipment provides children with something to do before the start of the movie. Each week, families enjoy the variety of live entertainment offered.

Hamden offers summer fun all August during the Annual "Dessert Festival" and Summer Movie Series. Each Friday night, guests have the chance to sit on blankets and lawn chairs while enjoying the family-friendly movie. Before the show, City Park hosts a Kids Dance Party complete with a DJ and music. In celebration of the festival, food offered evolves around desserts.
