During the 1960s, local researchers developed the now popular Gatorade in order to hydrate the U of F football team. Recognized by National Geographic as being "one of the best places to live and play," the community features a wide variety of dining options, museums, cultural venues and outdoor adventure opportunities.

Things to do

Beginning at the end of January, the local fairgrounds transform into a medieval village during the Hoggetowne Medieval Faire. Enjoy historic jousting tournaments and various competitions. Costumed performers provide comic and musical entertainment. Hundreds of vendors display their crafts and food.

In an attempt to raise awareness of native insects, the Florida Museum of Natural History presents the annual Butterfly Festival in October. Events include activities for all age groups, educational information, live entertainment and a butterfly release demonstration.

Just in time for Halloween, the community presents the annual Florida Bat Festival. The Lubee Bat Conservancy ranch invites guests to learn more about the creatures through demonstrations and by observing the bats interact, play and eat. The event features bat-themed activities, a bouncy house and refreshments.

During the first week of November, the city presents the annual Downtown Festival & Art Show. Hundreds of artists arrive to display and sell their creations that encompass many different genres. An Imagination Station enables young visitors to express their creative side through various activities. Four stages also present live musical entertainment.
