Ocala is situated in the central region of the state surrounded by forests, lush rolling hills and freshwater streams and creeks. The location was named for a historic Timucua village. The territory officially became a part of the United States in 1821. Mature trees line the city streets and the downtown area boasts historic homes and buildings along with dining, shopping and entertainment options.

Things To Do

The community commemorates the agricultural efforts of local youngsters during the annual February Southeastern Youth Fair and Rodeo. The event features animal exhibits and competitions, a carnival, games, rides, the rodeo and nightly entertainment.

All are invited to bring their appetites to the annual Ocala Crawfish Music Festival held in April. Crawfish, red beans, rice and corn are some of the delights on the menu. While feasting on Cajun cuisine, guests are treated to live entertainment and activities.

The city celebrates its cultural diversity during the week-long One Ocala One America celebration. Audiences have the chance to see popular ethnic-based films, watch local talent, sample ethnic foods and browse arts and crafts exhibits.

The last weekend in October brings automotive enthusiasts to the annual Ocala Pumpkin Run and Car Show. The event features a display of all makes and models of classic and vintage vehicles. Automotive vendors offer related merchandise and area bands provide live entertainment. The festivities also include unique demonstrations and displays along with children's activities.

As a means of promoting the downtown region, the city hosts the annual Feel Downtown Live. The program features live concerts throughout the year and culminates in the November Harvest Fest at Tuscawilla Park with a variety of family-friendly events.
