Good Times Await in the Great Lakes Community of Wilmette, IL

The Chicago suburb of Wilmette lies along the western shores of Lake Michigan on the northeastern border of Illinois. Archange Chevallier Ouilmette and his family were the first to establish a home here in 1829. Other pioneers followed and created farms.

Today, the community is known for the beautiful lakefront, tree-covered and cobbled streets. In addition to having an abundance of outdoor recreation options, interesting places to visit include the Bahá'í House of Worship and the Wilmette Historical Museum.

Things To Do

Toward the end of May, the Baha'i House of Worship hosts the annual Bahá'í Choral Festival Devotional Concerts. The event attracts hundreds of vocalists from around the world who offer a capella compositions, folk songs and spirituals under the spectacular 72-foot dome of the facility. All are welcome to enjoy the presentations, which are offered as a form of prayer.

To celebrate Independence Day, Wilmette residents are invited to attend the annual Gillson Beach Annual Fireworks & Family Fest. The festivities last the entire day and include live entertainment, a variety of popular foods, family-friendly activities and games. The group from the Starlight Theatre also offer a sneak peek of their stage performance. When the sun sets, the sky lights up with a spectacular fireworks display.

For a three-day weekend in July, residents venture to the downtown area for the annual Wilmette Summerfest and Sidewalk Sale. The event attracts thousands who enjoy eating specially prepared foods, seeing live entertainment and browsing through the arts and crafts displays. Local retailers also offer various discounts.

In September, automotive enthusiasts of all ages enjoy the Auto Historica event at the Wilmette Historical Museum. The event showcases classic cars from around the world. Some of the people displaying their unique cars are members of the Wilmette community.

In the middle of September, the St. Joseph Catholic School hosts an annual Oktoberfest. The festivities include dinner and a variety of craft beers along with live entertainment, traditional Bavarian foods and family-friendly activities."
