The city of Columbus was established along the fork of the White River in the south-central region of Indiana. General John Tipton and Luke Bonesteel arrived here in 1820. Tipton constructed a cabin on a hill overlooking the river. He named the location Tiponia. One year later, four more homesteads emerged along with a store. The new pioneers decided to change the name of their village to Columbus. Today, Columbus has a thriving arts community and boasts 18 larger-than-life sculptures throughout the town. Popular local sites include the Atterbury-Bakalar Air Museum, the Bartholomew County History Center and Anderson Falls.

Things To Do

For nine days in June, thousands attend the annual Bartholomew County Fair FFA and 4-H club members exhibit their animals. A carnival offers various rides and a game midway. Vendors offer a large selection of popular fair foods and merchandise. Guests also enjoy nightly concerts and performance exhibits.

During the second weekend in September, Columbus hosts the yearly Scottish Festival at the county fairgrounds. The festivities include animal demonstrations, traditional athletic competitions and a European car show. Pipe and drum groups perform along with Ceilidh dancers. A children's area offers various activities. There is also plenty of common Scottish foods and drink. Clans share stories and live exhibits explore the history of the country.

For three days during the last weekend in October, Columbus presents Indiana's YES Film Festival at the Yes Theater. The venue enables moviegoers to view a number of short and full-length films along with documentaries created by various world-class filmmakers. All films are judged and awarded prizes during the culminating awards ceremony.

During the first weekend in December, Columbus presents the Festival of Lights Parade. The festivities begin with a family-friendly show at The Commons. After dark, elaborately decorated and illuminated floats make their way along the downtown streets. Following the parade, all enjoy the fireworks display, which is synchronized to Christmas Music. Seasonal refreshments are also available."
