Experience Living History and Tradition in Lafayette, IN

The community of Lafayette was founded along the Wabash River in the northwestern region of Indiana. Fur trader William Digby established the new community in 1825. The village was named for French officer General Lafayette.

Today, the historic and diverse community boasts more than 200 restaurants along with many quaint boutique shops and modern industries. Lafayette is also known for Purdue University. Popular local destinations include the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette, the Columbian Park Zoo and the Tippecanoe County Historical Museum.

Things To Do

Each April, Lafayette hosts the Spring Celebration at the McAllister Recreation Center. The family-friendly event features face painting, sidewalk chalk crafts, games and an egg hunt.

In April, Purdue University presents Spring Fest. The University welcomes students of all ages to learn more about art, astronomy, zoology and other topics during the two days of interactive activities. There is also a Bug Bowl, a horticulture show and a veterinary open house.

Toward the end of April, anyone having a need for speed competes in the annual Purdue Grand Prix. The go-kart race takes place at the Grand Prix Track. The event features time trials, a classic car show and a parade along with other activities.

In preparation for the summer months, parents and children are invited to Learn to Fish. The event features fishing workshops, fish biology and provides instruction on rudimentary fishing skills. The parks and recreation department furnishes all of the necessary equipment.

In July, water sports enthusiasts participate in the Wabash Riverfest. Teams are welcome to compete in the canoe races. There is also a Riverfest 5K run. Children enjoy the inflatables, pony rides and balloon painting activities along with a bicycle rodeo. The event also features a fishing competition and a variety of exhibits.

At the end of September, Lafayette commemorates its heritage during the annual Feast of the Hunter's Moon. The event recreates the fall gathering of French traders and Native Americans at historic Fort Ouiatenon. Thousands of re-enactors participate in the event, which features military encampments, skill demonstrations, Highlander bands and a traditional open fire cooked feast."
