Welcome To Salina, KS

The United States obtained the Kansas territory in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. However, Preston B. Plumb did not establish the first settlement until 1856. The homestead was constructed along the Saline River.

Salina has all the small town charm and security that residents enjoy in a community combined with the attractions and amenities found in larger cities. Popular local destinations include the Rolling Hills Zoo, the Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure and the Smoky Hill Museum.

Things To Do

In February, vocalists have the chance to hone their skills and meet with other performers to present a public concert during the annual Golden Belt Vocal Festival. The festival participants largely consist of homeschool and Christian school students and adults. The event also allows choir members to express their faith through song.

Friday Night Live events begin with the first Friday in May and continue through September. The activity is designed to heighten appreciation for the visual and performing arts. Each week, artists display their works, offer discussions and live demonstrations. Various venues also offer live entertainment.

For four days in June, Salina celebrates the annual Smoky Hill River Festival. The festivities take place in Oakdale Park and include live entertainment on four stages. Each concert represents a different musical genre. The festival also includes the Fine Art and Four Rivers Craft Show with more than 100 artists from 35 states arriving to demonstrate their works and talent. The Artyopolis area welcomes children and teens to express their creativity along with enabling them to play age appropriate games. The festival's Food Row offers everything from funnel cakes and pizza to BBQ and Asian delights.

In September, the Smoky Hills Museum hosts the yearly Street Fair. The event celebrates the heritage and history of the region with a parade through the downtown area. There are also historic demonstrations, live entertainment, children's activities and refreshments. Each year, the festival is based around a specific theme.
