Welcome To Metairie, LA

Metairie was the first New Orleans suburb to emerge and is one of the oldest communities in the United States. French migrants established farm settlements here in the 1720s.

The name Metairie is a French word meaning tenant farm. Local points of interest include Lafreniere Park and Lake Pontchartrain. Both destinations offer a wealth of outdoor recreation opportunities. The city also hosts a number of fun annual events.

Things To Do

Every year, Mardi Gras festivities begin sometime between February 3 and March 9. Not unlike the events famously practiced in New Orleans, Metairie hosts many gala parades and King Cake Parties. A variety of krewes present parades on each day of the event.

On July 3, the community invites all to celebrate Independence Day during the annual Uncle Sam Jam. There is live entertainment all day long in addition to family-friendly games and plenty of food. When the sun goes down, all enjoy the fireworks.

In October, the community celebrates its Latino heritage during the annual Que Pasa Fest. Local residents of all ethnic backgrounds turn out for the great food, the entertaining music and dancing. Artists attending the event range from local talent to international performers. There are also traditional arts and craft exhibits along with activities for the kids.

Each November, the St. Louis King of France Catholic School hosts the Bucktown Seafood Festival. The event enables all to enjoy a wide selection of fresh seafood and New Orleans cuisine. There are also carnival rides and various games for young visitors. Guests additionally have the chance to bid on auction items and buy raffle tickets.

In celebration of the holiday season, Lafreniere Park has a drive-thru light display. Along with traditional exhibits, children enjoy the displays depicting cartoon and movie characters. Guests stay warm by purchasing refreshments at the concession stand. The display continues through December 30.
