Experience Modern-Day New England in Amherst, MA

The historic community lies in the central region of the state in what is known as the Connecticut River Valley. The territory was acquired from Native Americans in 1658 and European settlements began. However, Amherst did not become an individual township until 1734. Amherst boasts a number of prominent former residents who include Emily Dickinson, Noah Webster and Robert Frost. Interesting places to visit include the Amherst College Museum of Natural History, the Beneski Museum of Natural History and the Emily Dickinson Museum. Explore the local terrain by hiking the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail or venture to Puffer's Pond.

Things To Do

The unique Amherst Sustainability Festival takes place each April. Along with live entertainment, food and fun activities, the event strives to bring awareness of conservation through individual efforts. Guests have the opportunity to attend many different demonstration workshops that teach sustainable living.

For three weeks every April the Amherst Together organization presents the Spring Festival of Films for Humanity. The variety of films featured explore humanity from different angles by examining cultural, economic and social topics that affect people around the world.

Amherst College hosts the annual International Festival, which invites residents of all ethnic backgrounds to come together and celebrate their heritage. The event features cultural performances, informational booths, ethnic foods and crafts. The college also offers various activities geared toward children.

The community celebrates the fall harvest during the annual Apple Harvest Craft and Children's Festival. Apple-based foods, crafts and other activities are in abundance. The festival also features live entertainment, games, pony rides and a petting zoo.

The Emily Dickinson Museum appropriately provides the location for the annual Amherst Poetry Festival in September. Three stages on the property feature a continual line-up of contemporary poets reciting works.
