Make a Stop in Lowell, MA When Exploring New England

The city of Lowell was founded along the Merrimack River close to the northeastern border of Massachusetts. The town came into being during the 1820s as a manufacturing location for creating textiles. A village emerged and was named for Francis Cabot Lowell who played a prominent role during the Industrial Revolution. Today, the diverse city boasts amenities often found in major metropolis locations. Popular sights to visit include the unique Mill No. 5 shopping district, the water-front Vandenberg Esplanade and the Lowell National Historical Park.

Things To Do

In May, July and October, all are invited to get out and have some fun at the Mill for the Friday Nights events. The festivities occur on the second Friday of the designated months and include live music, unique vendors, food trucks and a beer garden.

For Independence Day, the city hosts the annual Lowell 4th of July Celebration. The festivities take place at the Sampas Pavilion and begin with children's activities in the afternoon. The Lowell High School band provides a pop concert. In the evening the crowd gathers to enjoy the fireworks display.

Each September, the local Gurjar Organization hosts the India Heritage Fest. Guests are invited to venture to the Esplanade to view traditional arts and crafts, clothing and artifacts. Artists are on hand to provide henna decorations. All also enjoy Indian cuisine along with Bollywood music and dancing.

Just before Halloween, the local Kiwanis Club hosts the fun-filled Monster Bash. Youngsters are welcome to trick-or-treat at various local businesses. All journey to the high school for the haunted house, activities, games and prizes. The festivities also include a costume contest and refreshments.

On the day after Thanksgiving, Lowell welcomes the holiday season by hosting the City of Lights Parade and Art Stroll. The festivities take place in the downtown area where street performers entertain crowds. There are also scheduled family-friendly activities, a hot chocolate competition, trolley tours and the Festival of Wreaths. Santa visits with children and all enjoy the procession of illuminated floats."
