See What New England has to Offer in Historic Bowie, MD

Bowie was established close to the southwestern border of Maryland. Before a town emerged, the area consisted mainly of farms and plantations. One year after the Baltimore & Potomac Railroad Company arrived in the area, land developer Ben Plumb sold lots around the railroad in order to start a residential settlement.

The new community was eventually named for the B&P Railroad President Oden Bowie and his business partner William Duckett Bowie. Today, Bowie is known for the town's long history of thoroughbred racing and historic locations. Community attractions include the Belair Mansion and stable museum, the Huntington Museum and the Bowie Railroad Station Museum.

Things To Do

From Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend there are free concerts presented in the community. In June and July, concerts are offered on Saturday evenings in Town Green Park. On Sunday evenings, music fills the air in Allen Pond Park. The music genres change each week and ranging from blues, jazz and R&B to classic rock and country.

During the first weekend in June, residents celebrate Bowiefest. The traditional event brings community businesses, organizations and entertainers together at Allen Pond Park for the festivities. Guests enjoy live entertainment and a variety of fair foods along with an arts and crafts exhibit, carnival rides and contests.

On the first weekend in October, Bowie celebrates the diversity of the community during the International Festival. Two stages offer live entertainment provided by traditionally costumed dancers, musicians and vocalists representing different cultures. Food offerings vary from popular American favorites to exotic dishes from across the world. Vendors sell arts, crafts and other items made by various ethnic cultures. Children enjoy a wide range of cultural-themed activities.

Each winter holiday season, the residents of Bowie enjoy an abundance of special activities. The town turns out for the Annual Tree-lighting ceremony. Interested individuals have the chance to make seasonal decorations at the Mall. There is also a Holiday House Decorating Contest for homeowners having spectacular displays."
