The largest city in North Carolina lies along the south-central border of the state. Thomas Spratt and his family first settled the area in 1755. His daughter married Thomas Polk, who would later be the great uncle of James K. Polk, a U.S. President. Today, the metropolis offers everything from a multitude of dining and shopping options to outdoor recreation, racing and family-friendly activities. Attractions found throughout the city include the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, the Carolinas Aviation Museum, the Mint Museum and the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Things To Do

For three weeks in May, the city presents one of the largest music events in the country with the annual 600 Festival. The festivities are meant to kickoff the NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 race that takes place at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. In addition to numerous country and rock music presentations, the celebration also include car exhibits, interactive activities and more.

The annual May Beer, Bourbon & BBQ Festival provides plenty of beer for the sipping, bourbon for tasting and BBQ for feasting. The event also features live music and seminars.

Dozens of craft brewers offer samples of their brews during the annual South End Hops Fest in May. The event also features concerts, food vendors and appetizers. Guests are also invited to bring their four-legged friends.

For eight days each Spring, thousands arrive to enjoy the festivities at The Charlotte Fair. The event features a carnival, animal demonstrations, fair foods and beverages along with games, vendors and other activities.

Locals and guests alike have the chance to samples more than 100 dishes created by restaurants during the three-day Taste of Charlotte. The event also features live entertainment, children's activities, street performers and unique shopping opportunities.
