Experience Old West Culture and History While Visiting Santa Fe, NM

Spanish colonists founded the city in 1610, which makes Santa Fe the oldest state capital in the country. The community lies in the heart of the state at an elevation of 7,199 feet (2,194 meters), which also makes the town the highest state capital in the U.S. The picturesque landscape includes the Sangre de Cristo Mountains that stand in the east. The city is also legendary for the variety of traditional markets. Art galleries feature works spanning ancient cultures to contemporary pieces. Outdoor recreation, performing arts venues and historic locations are all popular attractions.

Things To Do

For four days in June, the city hosts the annual Rodeo de Santa Fe. Professional Rodeo Cowboy events, nightly entertainment and children's events are all part of the family-orientated fun.

Each September, costumed performers re-enact the conquest made by General Don Diego de Vargas in 1692 during the Fiesta de Santa Fe. The event also features arts and crafts booths, live entertainment and plenty of food and drink.

Toward the end of September, dozens of wineries partner with local restaurants and amateur chefs to present the four-day Santa Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta. The festivities also include cooking demonstration, wine seminars and other activities that include feasting on various chili recipes.

The first weekend in October brings the Harvest Festival. The scenic El Rancho de las Golondrinas museum serves as the location where crops are gathered and prepared by local and visiting volunteers. The event also features live entertainment, an artist's market, wagon ride tours and other activities.
