The Fun Never Ends in the College Town of Athens, OH

European settlers migrated to the area and established homesteads here among the hills and along the Hocking River in the southeastern region of Ohio in 1797. The community continued growing and became the home of Ohio University. Local points of interest include the Ohio Valley Museum of Discovery, the Kennedy Museum of Art at Ohio University and the Dairy Barn Arts Center. Along with educational, arts and culture attractions, the Athens Trail Network and Strouds Run State Park are popular outdoor recreation areas.

Things To Do

For a week in April, movie fans have the chance to view films from around the world during the annual Athens International Film Festival. The Athena Theater presents the short and full-length films throughout the event. The wide selection of subject matter means there is something of interest to moviegoers of all ages.

In the middle of July, beer drinkers have the chance to sample the latest craft beers created in the state during the annual Ohio Brew Week. More than 45 Ohio brewers attend the event, which features more than 200 beers. Guests attending the festivities also have the chance to participate in dozens of events held throughout the week.

Labor Day Weekend brings the Athens Harvest Festival & Bluegrass Jamboree to town. The festivities take place at Lake Snowden and include a long lineup of local, regional and national performers. The community kitchen serves food made from locally produced ingredients in addition to the pig roast. All enjoy the old-fashioned games, which include apple bobbin', cob gobblin', pie eatin' and pumpkin carving. Young and old enjoy climbing the Great Pyramid haystack.

Just before the end of October, Athens hosts the legendary Halloween Block Party. The event takes place on Court Street and draws tens of thousands of guests. Three stages present live concerts. Costumed guests have a chance of winning prizes for the best costume. The dozens of bars and restaurants which line the street provide drinks, snacks and meals throughout the festivities."
