Explore History and Culture in the Great Lakes City of Erie, PA

The city is situated in the northwestern corner of the state on the shores of Lake Erie. The community began as Fort Presque Isle in1753 when French settlers arrived and hoped to defend themselves against the British. Presque Isla State Park remains a popular attraction. The dark, sparkling waters of the lake earned Erie the nickname "Gem City." As it is also home to the tall ship Niagara, the city is also sometimes called the "Flagship City." Other interesting destinations include the Erie Art Museum, the Erie Maritime Museum and the Firefighters Historical Museum.

Things To Do

The Ashbury Woods Maple Festival in April provides all with the chance to learn more about the native trees that have a long history in the area. The event features selected activities, crafts, demonstrations and tours for visitors of all ages.

Wine on the Lake is the city's annual tasting event that also takes place in April. Guests attending the event have the chance to sample regional wines, gourmet cheeses and meals prepared by local restaurants. Craft vendors appear at the event to provide shoppers with opportunities to purchase unique gifts.

In July, members of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church welcome all to the Panegyri Greek Festival. Spanning an entire weekend, the festivities include authentic Greek foods, music and dancing, arts and crafts exhibits and live entertainment.

The September Erie Irish Festival is hosted on the grounds of the St. Patrick Church. The event promises plenty of Irish music and dancing along with traditional foods and pints of ale.

Holiday shoppers find unique gift ideas during the November Christmas in the Country event. Dozens of artisans set up booths at the Bayfront Convention Center to display their crafts.
