Experience the Old West Come to Life in Abilene, TX

The Old West community lies in the heart of the state and was established by a group of cattlemen in 1881 for the purpose of shipping livestock on the railroad. The location was also the endpoint of the Chisholm Trail. Fascinating locations found in the city include Frontier Texas. The facility presents amazing life-sized holographic figures that tell the dramatic story of the Old West. Visitors get up close and personal with relics from the past when touring the Buffalo Gap Historic Village. The Grace Museum features exhibits of Western Texas art from the past to the present.

Things To Do

The Abilene Zoo Golden Anniversary Music Fest welcomes all to commemorate the event that features a variety of concerts, children's activities and admission prices that date back to 1966.

Each September, the community honors the tradition of the Old West by hosting the annual West Texas Fair and Rodeo. The occasion features a PCRA rodeo, equine and livestock shows, a carnival, nightly entertainment and various demonstrations and exhibits.

September brings the family-friendly Big Country Balloon Fest. Visitors gaze in awe at the array of colorful balloons that launch day and night into the Texas sky. Festivities also include balloon rides, live entertainment, food and merchandise vendors, children's games and auctions.

The community offers a number of festive Halloween-themed events in October. Costumed characters meet and greet guests, host a costume contest and provide fun activities during Boo at the Zoo.

The Haunted Abilene Carnevil event takes place at the Swenson House and features trolley rides, scary tours, a circus and other family-friendly activities.

In November, media fans have the chance to view short film projects presented at the 24fps International Short Film Festival. Independent and student filmmakers create the projects that span 20 minutes or less. Many works advance to the Cannes or Sundance Film Festivals and win awards.
