Get Acquainted with the Beautiful Shenandoah Valley in Harrisonburg, VA

The community lies in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley in the north-central region of the state between Richmond and Washington, D.C. English settlers began the town in 1737, which was named to honor Thomas Harrison who played an instrumental role in the growth of Harrisonburg. The local environment welcomes hiking and cycling during the summer and skiing during the winter. Must-see local destinations include the Heritage Museum and the Harrisonburg Fire Department Museum. In addition to displaying hundreds of quilts, the Virginia Quilt Museum also houses antique toys and sewing machines along with having a Civil War Gallery.

Things To Do

The biannual Rocktown Beer & Music Festival takes place in April and September. Turner Pavilion & Park serves as the location where chosen brewers offer samples of their flagship, seasonal and rare beers. Local and national bands provide live entertainment. A variety of vendors offer merchandise and food.

From mid June through mid August, the courthouse lawn welcomes all for the summer Fridays on the Square events. Live bands entertain audiences one week and the next features movies under the stars. Guests are welcome to bring their own beverages, picnics and snacks.

Toward the end of September, local residents celebrate their diverse cultural backgrounds during the Harrisonburg International Festival, which is held in Hillandale Park. Dressed in traditional costumes, performing participants offer dance, musical and theatrical presentations that represent their heritage. The event also features a variety of ethnic foods.

For a weekend in July, friends and families enjoy the Red Wing Roots Festival in Natural Chimneys Park. Four stages present approximately 40 bands throughout the event. There is also crafts, food, kid's activities, bike rides and hiking adventures.

In preparation for Halloween, the community presents the annual Family Halloween Carnival at the Cecil F. Gilkerson Community Center. The number of fun-filled activities include themed crafts, games, sweet treats and a children's costume contest.
