Explore American History and Have Fun While Visiting Springfield, VA

The historic community of Springfield was founded along the upper northeastern border of Virginia. James Keene was one of the first to arrive in the area and he constructed a grist and saw mill sometime around 1796. The community began growing in 1847 after the construction of the Daingerfield Station in 1847. The location remained small and rural until 1946 when Edward Carr played an instrumental role in establishing residential real estate.

The opening of Springfield Mall in the 1970s transformed the town into a major shopping area. Popular locations in the community include the Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site and the historic Woodlawn estate.

Things To Do

During the first weekend in June, the city celebrates Springfield Days. The festivities begin with a run/walk and continue with the PetFest at the SouthRun Recreation Center. Many enjoy attending the craft fair at the United Methodist Church. The Richard Byrd Library hosts a book sale. Teams unite to compete in the cardboard boat regatta at Lake Accotink Park.

From July through August, residents are invited to journey to the Lee District Park Amphitheater to enjoy the Summer Concert Series on Wednesday nights. Guests are welcome to bring family and friends along with picnic meals, snacks and beverages.

In the middle of September, Springfield hosts the annual Shrimp & Crab Leg Feast at the volunteer fire station. An admission ticket provides guests with an all you can eat feast of crab legs, shrimp or hot dogs along with hush puppies and cole slaw. Beer, wine and other beverages are also available.

Each October, the Good Shepherd Housing hosts an annual Golf Outing at the Old Hickory Golf Club. All are welcome to participate in the event. The proceeds from the event are used to benefit local families."
