Welcome To Montpelier, VT

The smallest capital city in the country stands along the shoreline of the Winooski River nestled in the Green Mountains in the heart of the state. Colonel Jacob Davis established the first settlement here in the late 1780s and named the location for Montpellier, France.

Today, the charming New England community boasts big city amenities in the way of indoor and outdoor entertainment, dining and shopping venues. Must-see destinations include the North Branch Nature Center, the T.W. Wood Art Gallery and the Vermont History Museum.

Things To Do

For nine days in March, Montpelier hosts the annual Green Mountain Film Festival. Dozens of films are presented for the viewing pleasure of audiences. The movies fall into different categories and cover a wide range of topics. Audiences and filmmakers are also invited to attend panel discussions and professional workshops. Judges select and award the best entries.

During the first weekend in May, wine drinkers are invited to attend the annual Montpelier Wine Festival. The family-friendly event takes place at James Madison's historic mansion and includes sampling ciders and wines created by vintners from around the state. Activities also include arts and crafts exhibits, concerts, a Most Marvelous Hat Contest and corn hole games. Children enjoy the kite-making and flying classes along with barrel train rides and the petting zoo.

The Independence Day Festival on July 3 remains the largest celebration of the year. Dozens of craft and food vendors line State Street. Family-friendly activities include a Family Olympics on the State House lawn. Running enthusiasts take part in the Montpelier Mile Road race, which is followed by a grand parade. Music plays throughout the day and sunset brings the fireworks.

When fall comes around, the first weekend in October is devoted to the yearly Fiber Festival and Sheepdog Trials event. Fiber arts and crafts exhibits go on display, and artists provide interactive demonstrations. All enjoy the animal exhibits and competitions along with watching the sheep dogs perform. The location additionally features live entertainment and refreshments.
